Sex chromosome aneuploids - turner's syndrome and metafemale syndrome

Turner's syndrome, caused by the presence of only one X chromosome (XO), is an example of a sex chromosome aneuploid. Such females are sterile with virtually no ovaries and limited development of secondary sex characteristic.

Other features include short stature, webbed neck, underdeveloped breasts and widely spaced nipples.

There is usually no mental retardation.

Another sex chromosome aneuploid condition is called metafemale syndrome, characterized by at least three X chromosome (XXX).

These females have underdeveloped genital organs and limited fertility and are generally mentally retarded.

Such individuals are sterile males.

They have undeveloped testes, scanty body hair, and enlarged breasts and are characteristically somewhat mentally disadvantaged.
