Antagonists

Antagonists bind to the receptor site and do not activate the receptor. They prevent another drug or natural body chemical from binding by occupying or inactivating the receptor site. Antagonists block the actions of agonists, inverse agonists, and partial agonists.

Naloxone is an example of a pure antagonist. Administration reverses the effects of opiates (e.g., heroin) by occupying the receptor site and preventing the heroin from binding.
