Colproscopy

Colproscopy is a procedure used to evaluate the status of the mucosa of the vagina and cervix.

It is often the first test done after an abnormal pap smear.

Colproscopy is the direct examination of the vaginal and cervical mucosa with a low-power binocular microscope called a colposcope that magnifies the mucous membrane from about 6 to 40 times its actual size.

The application of a 3% solution of acetic acid removes mucus and enhances the appearance of mucosal columnar epithelium.
