DNA fingerprinting

A technique called DNA fingerprinting is now used in research and a variety of legal situations to help identify individuals. In each person, certain DNA segments contain base sequences that are repeated several times.

Both the number of repeat copies in one region and the number of regions subject to repeat are different from one person to another.

Except for identical twins, the chance that two people would have the same DNA fingerprint is about 1 in 10 billion, about twice the population of the world.

DNA fingerprinting can be done with minute quantities of DNA, for example, from a single strand of hair, a drop of semen, or a spot of blood. DNA fingerprinting is also used to determine paternity.
