Mapping the human genome

A genome is the complete genetic makeup of an organism. Of the approximately 100,000 genes in a human cell, only a small number have been identified and roughly located on various chromosomes. In 1988 a project to map and sequence the entire human genome got underway.

A major goal is the application of molecular genetics to medical research to identify and find cures for certain diseases.
