Sciatica is a type of neuritis characterized by severe pain along the path of the sciatic nerve or its branches. Inflammation or injury of the nerve causes pain that passes from the back or thigh down its length into the leg, foot and toes.
Probably the most common cause of sciatica is a herniated (slipped) intervertebral disc.
