Temporomandibular TMD Joint Syndrome

One problem associated with the Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is TMJ syndrome. It is characterized by dull pain around ear, tenderness of the jaw muscles, a clicking or popping noise when opening or closing the mouth, limited or abnormal opening of the mouth, headache, tooth sensitivity, and abnormal wearing of the teeth.

Temporomandibular joint syndrome can be caused by improperly aligned teeth, grinding or clenching the teeth, trauma to the jaw, or arthritis.

Treatment may involve application of moist heat or ice, a soft diet, taking aspirin, muscle retraining, adjusting or reshaping the teeth, orthodontic treatment, or surgery.
