Stratified Squamous Epithelium

Stratified-Squamous-Epithelium-definition
Stratified Squamous Epithelium
Stratified squamous epithelium consists of many layers of cells, making this tissue relatively thick. Only the cells near the free surface, however, are likely to be flattened Those in the deeper layers, where cellular reproduction occurs, are usually cuboidal or columnar As the newer cells grow, older ones arc pushed funner and further outward, and they tend to become flattened.

This tissue forms the outermost lasers of the skin (epidermis) As the older cells are pushed outward, they accumulate a protein called keratin. As this happens, the cells become hardened and die.

This action produces a covering of dry, tough, protective material that prevents the escape of water from underlying tissues and the entrance of various microorganisms.

Stratified squamous epithelium also lines the mouth cavity, throat vagina, and anal canal In these parts the tissue is not fraternized it remains moist, and the cells on the free surfaces remain alive.
