Transitional Epithelium Definition

Transitional-Epithelium-definition
Transitional Epithelium
Transitional epithelium is specialized to undergo changes in tension It forms the inner lining of the urinary bladder and the passageways of the urinaiy system. When the wall of one of these organs is contracted, the tissue consists of several layers of cuboidal cells; however, when the organ is distended, the tissue is stretched and may have only two layers—a single layer of cuboidal cells covered by a layer of large, squamous cells,

In addition to providing a dis-tensible lining, transitional epithelium is thought to form a barrier that helps to prevent the contents of the urinary tract from diffusing out of its passageways.
