Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)

Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis is more convenient and less time-consuming for many patients because it easily can be done at home or while working.

Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis uses peritoneum as the dialyzing membrane. Since peritoneum is a selectively permeable membrane, it permits rapid Bidirectional transfer of substances. the trip of a catheter is placed in the patient's peritoneal cavity and connected to a supply of dialysate

Gravity feeds the dialysate into the cavity from its plastic container.

When the process is complete, the solution returned from the cavity to the plastic container and then discarded.

Although continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis is more convenient than hemodialysis, the risk of infection is greater due to the indwelling catheter.
