Marfan syndrome

Marfan syndrome is an inherited disorder that results in abnormalities of connective tissue, most likely a defect in collage or elastin, especially in the skeleton, eyes and cardiovascular system.

Marfan victims tend to be tall, with disproportionately long arms. They have an unusually long lower half of the body, very long fingers and toes and other skeletal defects. Based on his physical appearance, Abraham Lincoln is believed to have had Marfan syndrome.

Among the serious cardiovascular problems are weakened area in a arota (main artery that emerges from the heart), which can suddenly burst, and weakened heart valves.

Flo Hyman, an outstanding American female volleyball player, died of problems associated with Marfan syndrome in January 1986.
