Histocompatibility Testing

The success of a proposed organ or tissue transplant depends on histocompatibility, that is, the tissue compatibility between the donor and the recipient.

The more similar the MHC antigens, the greater the histocompatibility, and the higher the probability the transplant will not be rejected. Tissue typing (histocompatibility testing) is done before any organ transplant.

A nationwide computerized registry helps physicians select the most histocompatible and needy organ transplant recipients whenever donor organs become available. Also, in cases of disputed parentage, tissue typing can be used to establish paternity.
