TERATOGENICITY

Adverse drugs reactions that produce harm to a developing fetus are called teratogenic effects. To reduce possible harm to the fetus, pregnant women and their health care providers must weigh the risks versus the benefit of taking drugs.

To assist in their decision-making, pregnancy safety categories have been created. Drugs with no known teratogenic effects in humans are listed in category A.

Few drugs are found in category A.

Similar risk may exist for drugs listed in categories C, D, and X, however when the risk is found in animal reproduction studies the drugs are classified in category C.

There are no adequate, controlled tests in humans. Benefits do not outweigh the risk for drugs listed in category X.
