What Is Potency Of Drug

Efficacy and potency are related. Drugs that have a high efficacy at a low dose are very potent. In other words, only a small dose is required to produce the maximum drug effect. Drugs that must be administered in very high doses to produce a minimal effect have low potency.

In image, drug A is more potent than drug B and drug C because a lower dose produces an equal response.

Efficacy is more important than potency when determining usefulness of a drug unless the dose.

That is required to produce the therapeutic effect is so large that it is impractical to administer. When choosing between two equally effective drugs, pharma-co-kinetic factors, the disease, and the ability of the patient to tolerate the side effects of the drug become more important than the dose that is required to produce an effect.
